From April 8th to 14th, 2024, the picturesque village of Lendak, Slovakia, played host to a unique cultural initiative: Celebrating Traditional Crafts. This project, organized by ADEL Slovakia, brought together participants from Slovakia and Poland to explore, learn, and preserve the rich traditions and crafts of the region. <\/span>Over the course of the week, participants engaged in various workshops and activities that deepened their appreciation for traditional skills while fostering intercultural understanding and personal growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Participants in the Celebrating Traditional Crafts project had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditional ways of life in Lendak. Through hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, they learned a wide range of crafts and skills: <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Sewing and crafting traditional shoes:<\/strong> Participants discovered the intricate process of making traditional shoes, appreciating the patience and dexterity required to create these beautiful pieces. The activity not only taught them sewing techniques but also highlighted the cultural significance of these traditional items.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making pierogi\/pirohy\/dumpling with potatoes and sheep cheese and traditional food:<\/strong> The art of making pierogi was a favorite among many. Participants learned to prepare the dough, make fillings, and shape the pierogi, all while working collaboratively. This culinary experience also involved tasting the fruits of their labor, adding a delicious dimension to their learning. <\/span><\/p>\n

Exploring traditional costumes:<\/strong> Workshops on traditional clothing provided insights into the various types of attire worn for different occasions. Participants learned how to make small parts of these costumes, such as bows, and gained an understanding of the cultural heritage associated with these garments. <\/span><\/p>\n

Farm visit and cheese making:<\/strong> A visit to a local farm allowed participants to experience the process of making cheese and other dairy products. They learned to milk goats and sheep, gaining a newfound respect for the labor-intensive work of farmers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Cultural and historical insights:<\/strong> The project included visits to local museums and historical sites, where participants learned about the history and daily lives of the people of Lendak. These visits enriched their understanding of the region\u00b4s cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the technical skills, participants experienced significant personal and social growth. Many reported increased confidence, improved communication skills, and a deeper understanding of different educational methods: <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Skill development:<\/strong> Many participants highlighted the development of practical skills such as sewing, cooking, and crafting. These skills not only enriched their personal lives but also encouraged them to continue exploring traditional crafts in their own communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Personal reflection:<\/strong> The project provided a space for personal reflection and growth. Participants reported feeling more confident, open, and willing to step out of their comfort zones. Activities like the treasure hunt and group discussions were particularly impactful in fostering these changes. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Celebrating Traditional Crafts project in Lendak was more than just an exploration of cultural heritage; it was a transformative experience for all involved. By blending practical skills with personal development, the project created lasting memories and inspired participants to continue preserving and celebrating traditional crafts in their own lives.
